What strategies should I employ this summer to knock out maintenance tasks?

During the slower summer months, whenever you have a half-hour or several hours to spare, consider knocking out some maintenance tasks that have been on the back burner throughout the busy season. Instead of spending too much time deciding, “What can I do right now?” make the best use of your time by applying these tips to your routine:

  1. Make a list of all the things you need (not want) to do. This might include: sweeping and dusting; machine maintenance; personalizing samples; rearranging shelves; renewing your showroom; updating your website and social media; and cleaning up your computer files and folders.
  2. Add to your to-do list an approximation of the time it will take to complete each task.
  3. Break down tasks that take longer into parts. In other words, if you have a three-hour task and only have an hour at a time, break it into three parts.
  4. Prioritize your tasks so that the most important ones are sure to get finished.

You will be amazed at how many items you can mark off of your to-do list. An organized shop and showroom can lift your spirits.
