Pointers on Taking Product Shots

Employ these techniques when capturing photos of your work

Although I’m not a professional photographer by any means, there are a few techniques that I employ when using my trusty smartphone to snap a product shot.

First, I make sure that the product is the central focus. This means decluttering a surface if you do not have a dedicated area for product shots. I often use a kitchen butcher block as a platform. Items that may exist in the background of a photo can be distracting, so if you can, use depth of field in the photography to keep the focus sharp on the product while blurring the background.

Lighting is important. Use natural light when you can but avoid pointing the camera into the sun. Take several photos from different angles, showing any depth that may exist with the product.
