Being able to calculate the square footage of glass (or any other material) is key to knowing just how many square feet you will need to complete a job. It is also useful to be able to calculate the weight of a glass sign or a glass award when this information is not readily available. This can help determine the type and weight limit of hardware to use for an installation, or to be able to estimate an award weight for shipping cost estimates.
Square Footage Calculation
Example: A standard size sheet of glass that we use is 96 inches wide X 130 inches long.
96 inches X 130 inches = 12,480 square inches · 144 = 86.87 square feet.
Glass Weight Calculation
Example 1: Glass Table Top 48 inches X 84 inches X 0.75 inches thick. 48 inches X 96 inches = 4,608 X 0.75 (3/4 inch thickness) = 3, 456 · 11 (the average weight of one foot of glass one inch thick) = 314.18 pounds.
Example 2: Glass Engraving Block 6 inches X 8 inches X 0.5 inches thick. 6 inches X 8 inches = 48 X 0.5 (1/2 inch thickness) · 11 = 2.18 pounds.
