MONTREAL-Gildan Activewear announces that it has been included in the 2019 Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index. This marks the seventh consecutive year the company has made the list.

The annual list rates companies in the U.S. and Canada on their commitment to corporate sustainability. Gildan regularly makes the index largely due to the company’s long-term, global projects related to waste minimization, emissions reductions, and energy efficiency.

“We take great pride in our inclusion on this index once again this year, being one of only two apparel companies on the North American index,” says Claudia Sandoval, vice president of corporate citizenship at Gildan. “We are focused on increasing the transparency of our operations and approaching issues in a holistic way.”

Sandoval adds that Gildan’s vertically integrated business model allows the company to “exercise significant control over the vast majority” of the supply chain.

“This provides Gildan with the unique ability to ensure a work environment that supports our employees’ well-being and professional growth,” notes Sandoval. “It also allows us to identify environmental and resource efficiencies throughout the life cycle of our products and support the continued growth and vitality of our neighboring communities.”

According to Gildan, Dow Jones acknowledged the company’s efforts in areas such as codes of business conduct, environmental policy and management systems, environmental reporting, product stewardship, corporate citizenship, and philanthropy.
