Marketing Tips for a New Local Business

Bob Hagel of Eagle's Mark offers marketing insights for new businesses.

My favorite way to market my business is through networking. I am a big believer in the local Chamber of Commerce. The secret to success is not only going to all the events and meeting as many people as you can, but to join committees and be actively helping build your chamber. Meeting lots of people is a first step, but business comes from people you know. They need to know you are interested in helping them, that they can trust you and you are reliable. Working with people on a committee shows them who you really are.

I also have found targeted marketing to be a worthwhile effort. I use postcards. They don’t have to be opened to be seen, are less expensive to mail and can be sent to a list of potential customers you have targeted for specific products. I print up a number of post cards each featuring a specific product type or market segment. I might have 100 to 200 of each printed. I can then mail them as I have time or as I identify new target customers. Product photos are important. Less is more when it comes to advertising words.
