Alton Herring, the owner of Herring Sales, passed away Friday, Oct. 1. Herring was one of the prominent leaders in the creation of the Mid South Sign Association (MSSA) and was the first recipient of the MSSA Agnew/Condray Award plus an MSSA Hall of Fame recipient.

According to MSSA, the Agnew/Condray Excellence Award is an annual award presented to individuals for distinguished service, loyalty, and devotion

Karen Warr, executive director of MSSA, says, “With over half a century of knowledge about the sign business, Alton Herring has proven himself to be one the industry’s most prolific and passionate leaders — by listening to his customers; whether that customer is just starting up or settling into its third generation, he never fails to greet each of them with a smile and a handshake.”

Warr says the association will miss seeing Alton’s smiling face.

Funeral arrangements

A funeral service for Herring will be held on Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. at Mount Bethel Baptist Church in Leesville, Louisiana. Visitations will be observed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
