How signage can bolster small home-services businesses

Vehicle wraps & yard signs make a difference for home delivery & service providers.

Ventura’s Water Store in Ventura, California, decided to test the impact of vehicle wraps on its home delivery and retail services. They started with one wrap. After six weeks, they saw such an increase in phone calls and business in the delivery van’s area that they purchased five more wraps. Now, every time they buy a new van, they have it wrapped, creating a fleet of traveling billboards. The vans also serve as giant monument signs when parked near the street in the retail store’s lot, earning thousands of impressions each day.

Without question, vehicle graphics and wraps offer the best return on investment in signage for small home-services businesses, which tend to have limited marketing budgets and are often operated in residential areas or industrial complexes. In these locations, digital signage is either not allowed or won’t produce the desired return because the business isn’t in a high-traffic area.

I’m also seeing more interest in reflective vinyl being used in conjunction with vehicle graphics and yard signs — part of a comprehensive signage strategy that enables small businesses to fully enhance their local presence and gain a competitive edge.

The key to any signage package lies in utilizing a strategy combining professional design, strategic placement, and a willingness to adapt to seasonal needs and emerging trends.

Attention is the intention

As the signage industry evolves, we’re seeing customers increasingly turn to creative strategies and innovative messaging for their small home-services businesses.

Reflective vinyl incorporated into vehicle graphics and yard signs improves visibility and safety while maintaining marketing effectiveness — and is especially useful during winter months with reduced daylight hours. Lately, we’ve seen more of an interest in this in conjunction with vehicle graphics and yard signs.

Signage can be more effectively used to promote other services offered when a QR code and phone number are incorporated into the design of the wrap or sign, with a call to action such as “Check out these other services we offer” or similar messaging. Today, a QR code provides customers with a “fast pass” to quickly research and contact the company. This simple addition can add tremendous value to any sign or vehicle wrap and can often lead to a more immediate sale.

The most effective combination of signage elements are vehicle wraps (either full or partial) and yard signs posted at every completed project where appropriate. More personal, eye-catching graphics can be utilized in these instances to gain more attention from passersby.

Temporary signs, such as A-frames or yard signs, can significantly boost a business’ exposure. By placing them at active project sites, contractors can attract attention from nearby residents and generate new leads. Asking the client to allow yard signs to remain on-site for a week after completion can further extend the marketing window.

Tips for creating signs with impact

  • Keeping it simple and straightforward, with the company logo prominent, is imperative. If the company name and logo don’t provide a clear message as to what the business specifically does, include a small, prioritized list of services with the company’s website, QR code, and possibly a phone number.
  • If a company’s budget is really limited, put the graphics on the back or rear of the vehicle. The tailgate of a truck or the back of the van will get more views from vehicles following behind for miles and will get more impressions than a side graphic zipping past for a few seconds.
  • Consider changing all or part of the wrap seasonally, to emphasize what the most current needs of the community may be. A snow-removal service can start advertising just before winter, for instance, by adding small magnets or vinyl graphics directly to all sides of a company vehicle.
  • One of the more common mistakes is trying to include too much information in the signage. Another mistake is when a customer’s logo doesn’t emphasize or obviously state what the company does. Take a company with a name like “Bob’s Mobile Auto Repair.” The words “Mobile Auto Repair” are what future customers are looking for, not “Bob’s,” so they should be larger or otherwise made to stand out.

For small home-services businesses, signage represents a unique opportunity to boost visibility, attract customers, and ultimately drive growth. In an increasingly digital world, the tangible presence of effective signage continues to play a crucial role in a small business’ success. Investing in quality signage isn’t just an option but a necessity for growth and long-term success.

Design is everything. Having a professionally designed sign or vehicle wrap is critical to making a memorable first impression and gives the company more credibility than a poorly designed wrap or sign. Professionally designed and produced signs and vehicle wraps provide a lasting impression of the company.
