WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-HanesBrands partners with How2Recycle, a standardized labeling system to work toward its zero waste goals. With the partnership, the organization helps communicate how to recycle HanesBrands packaging for its goods in the U.S. and Canada.
HanesBrands says it has submitted product packaging components for roughly 500 million packages for recyclability assessments by How2Recycle. The labels identify materials used in the packaging, what to do with each element, actions to take before recycling, and how to get more information.
“As a major manufacturer of some of North America’s most popular brands of everyday basic innerwear and activewear apparel, we take responsibility for minimizing the environmental impacts of our operations, products, and packaging,” says Mike Faircloth, HanesBrands’ group president, global operations, American Casualwear, and e-commerce. “Recycling is a vital part of HanesBrands’ environmental sustainability strategy, and joining forces with How2Recycle is an important step in including our consumers in this effort.”
The company projects a launch of the program in six months, beginning with underwear and men’s T-shirts, followed by additional product lines such as socks, bras, panties, and activewear. The initiative falls under HanesBrands’ ongoing commitment to sustainability and eco-consciousness, dubbed Hanes For Good. The company says it recycled more than 107 million pounds of fabric, corrugate, plastic and other materials in 2018 and earned an award from Energy Star for its efforts earlier this year.
