Featured Project: Frosty New York City

Recently, Axiom Design and Build LLC, a sign company and full fabrication shop based out of New York City, installed a frosted cut vinyl project into one of the city’s largest database companies, MongoDB.

For the project, the team at Axiom Design used over 1,500 square feet of intricate cut 3M 7725SE Dusted Crystal/Frosted Crystal and 3M 180C Plotter Cut Vinyl to create the five boroughs of New York City, including New Jersey.

Chrystal Gopaulsingh, the company’s project manager, tells GRAPHICS PRO, “The uniqueness of this project comes with the intricacies of the design and lining up the vinyl with its 3M counterparts. As a primary layer, white 3M vinyl set the focal point of the design with the frosted 3M creating the shadow counterpart, as to create depth.”

“Each vinyl together created a visual hierarchy which tool the eyes through the design and created the perspective,” she adds.

When it came to application challenges, Gopaulsingh says there were several, but due to the masking techniques applied during installation, a dry application was necessary.

“Using a wet application process would have impaired the sticking of such fine cut vinyl to the surface upon the removal of the masking,” she explains.

The result—an intricate display of New York City.

Axiom Design’s services include custom sign fabrication, dimensional letters, illuminated/back-lit signs, etched/engraved signs, stencils, etched glass, vinyl graphics, and ADA signs.
