Featured Project: Converting ‘Way Too Busy’ Into ‘Just Right’
Four Winds Interactive's software powers the signage installed by Boston's Art of Context, which does wayfinding and other signage for airports.
Denver-based Four Winds Interactive, a provider of digital signage solutions including content management software, did a major project for Massport, one of the largest transportation networks in the Northeast U.S.
Massport owns and operates, among other transportation hubs, Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). The problem at BOS was, too much clutter! The sprawling facility-which sees 30 million annual visitors and caters to 40 different airlines across four terminals-had a vast amount of audio and visual clutter, including various systems and displays from different vendors. The mediums of communication were all over the map: static and digital signage, live TV, audio announcements, and more.
Airport technicians first worked on a comprehensive solution that would make for better internal and external communications among the airport’s various user groups and the site’s managers, and then it went shopping for a vendor. After a bidding process Four Winds Interactive was chosen as software provider and Boston’s Art of Context (AOC) as the content designers and implementers to create the comprehensive program airport ownership was looking for.
In July 2012, BOS and AOC implemented a pilot signage program of eight signs and rolled out 28 additional screens in August 2013 with applications.
From those small beginnings a larger program put into place. Results, the airport says, included increased operational efficiency; enhanced communications consistency; increased concession revenue; and an improved passenger experience.
