Establishing Workplace Safety
Take these preventative measures to ensure safety in the workplace.
Although you can never prevent an unexpected negative occurrence, it is a good idea to have a plan for you and your employees to follow if one ever does happen. This ensures that everyone is on the same page and knows their individual role, so they can snap into action as needed. Preventative measures start with safety training in the event of accidents; i.e. knowing where first aid kits are, educating personnel on basic first aid, and defining roles in the event that certain scenarios play out. There are a number of companies that offer this kind of training, and depending on the size of your organization, this may be a good thing to research.
Second, make sure that you and your employees know what and what not to do in the event that an intruder comes into the building during work hours. Make sure that all employees understand that safety comes before loss, and that they are trained to be smart rather than be heroes. Never try overpowering an assailant, as you never can be sure if they have a weapon or not. Educate your employees on the proper way to handle adverse situations and utilize outside experts to provide this education. Your local police department or municipal building is a good place to start and will probably give you or point you in the right direction to getting this education.
