Editor’s note: The following tip is specifically used on a Universal Laser Systems rotary.
The problem with engraving stainless-steel tumblers is that the opening is so large, the cup slides all the way over the rotary cone and is too loose to be engraved. To solve that problem, I created a custom jig consisting of three laser-cut pieces of acrylic that are glued together to fixture the cup on our Universal Laser Systems rotary.
First, we measured the diameter of the cone where we wanted the cup to sit, and cut an inner circle in each acrylic piece to that size. We used three pieces of acrylic so we could create an inner groove to place a rubber ring from the cup’s original lids. This way we got a perfect fit to keep the cup from slipping on the jig while fixed.
