What is important to note about making stamps with a laser?

One of the major advancements in stamp making with a laser is the rubber sheet that is engraved to create the stamp die. Engraving rubber sheets are now specially formulated for low or no odor, making them about as objectionable as laser engraving plastic or acrylic.

It is important to laser engrave on the machined smooth side of the rubber. Engraving depth is a key component to a good quality stamp impression. Use a power of 100% and adjust the laser’s speed setting to achieve a .040″ engraving depth. Laser power equals speed when it comes to making stamps, and a 35- to 40-watt system is the minimum recommended, while a 50- to 75-watt system becomes more practical for production.
