EducationQ&A

What do you recommend doing to avoid or solve problems with heat transfer?

Most often, problems result from operator error. Next are heat press and/or printer errors. These can be easily remedied by:

  1. Verifying that the printer is set at optimal settings;
  2. Verifying that the printer is compatible with the paper being used. For example, if the shop owner is using an inkjet printer (using pigment or dye-based inks), the heat-transfer paper must be inkjet paper. The same extends to laser printers and compatible laser transfer paper;
  3. Verifying the heat press temperature and pressure are correct according to manufacturer instructions;
  4. Because some papers are hot-peel or cool-peel, use medium or heavy pressure for the best outcome. Experts agree that acquiring a precision-made, high-quality heat press is key;
  5. Test, test, test. Several manufacturers offer test materials for these purposes. Follow instructions that come with the transfer paper to ensure peak performance. Subscribe to YouTube channels dedicated to printing for step-by-step video instruction. If problems occur after the first one or two tests, we recommend calling your manufacturer’s customer support to receive walk-through assistance.
