WINSTON SALEM, N.C.-Hanes plans to close its sock manufacturing plant, located in Mount Airy, North Carolina. The Winston-Salem Journal reports that the company aims to shutter the facility this fall.

According to the report, the company is shifting production to its El Salvador plant and plans to scale back production in North Carolina starting in May. The facility employs 220 individuals in the area.

Mike Faircloth, president of global supply chain, information technology and e-commerce for Hanesbrands, tells the newspaper that the company has strived to keep the location competitive in the worldwide market, but that “the higher costs of raw materials, including polyester, in the Western Hemisphere, necessitate that we realign our global sock manufacturing.”

Despite the closing, the report says the company hopes to place Mount Airy workers at other Hanes facilities in North Carolina, including its distribution centers in Winston-Salem and High Point.
