One of the biggest challenges in laser engraving is communication between the customer and the shop. As a shop owner, it is your job to make sure the customer is getting exactly what they envision.
At my shop, it became apparent early on that we needed to go through a digital proof approval process with each customer. This way, we had a written approval on the design, size, and location of the engraving from the customer before we started the job. The process takes time, so we implemented a minimum $40 art file and machine set-up fee. For more complex projects, our set-up fee can go as high as $150.
Many shops don’t charge set-up fees, and they don’t go through a proofing process when starting out. Unfortunately, this is often reflected in their feedback scores. Once we implemented the proof policy, our customer satisfaction went through the roof.
