Signage Befitting a Nearly 150-Year-Old Building

The building, constructed on the Naval Academy's campus, was built in 1876 and is one of the two oldest buildings on the Naval Academy grounds.

Signcraft was launched in 1980 in an Annapolis, Maryland, basement, doing screen printing and boat lettering. Today it’s a full-service sign and graphics shop that counts the local U.S. Naval Academy as one of its customers.

One of that institution’s oldest buildings is now the home of 1845 Coffee, and earlier this year the shop’s landlord-the Naval Academy-hired Signcraft to do the signage for the building, which was built in 1876. Built as a gatehouse, it’s one of only two buildings remaining on the campus built in the 19th century. (1845 is the year the Naval Academy opened.)

The building’s front glass door was given an etched-look window frosting, and vinyl wall graphics were installed inside. For the building’s exterior, Signcraft used a CNC router to carve an HDU sign that was then mounted onto a medium-density overlay wood panel.

The sign was up and ready by July, when 1845 Coffee held its grand opening.
