Giving Back: MSSA Uses Annual Trade Show Gathering to Aid Habitat for Humanity
At the show the MSSA also awarded 41 scholarships and raised nearly $90,000 for its scholarship foundation through a golf tournament.
This summer, when the Winchester, Tennessee-based Mid-South Sign Association, a nonprofit industry trade group, held its annual trade show-SignConnexion-it decided to add a new element for the first time that the association’s Annie Anderson says is likely going to become a permanent fixture.
On a Friday during the show, about 30 MSSA members boarded a bus from Birmingham, Alabama, to South Birmingham to participate in a Habitat for Humanity build. Upon arrival the team was presented with a list-hand-written on a piece of cardboard-of things that needed to be done and the volunteers set about doing them, finishing everything on the list before calling it a day.
Columbus, Ohio-based Plaskolite LLC and West Monroe, Louisiana-based Agnew Sign & Awning sponsored the MSSA outing. The work was done on a Habitat house that is being built for a single mother in nursing school.
“It was so rewarding and our members gave so much great feedback that we have decided to add an experience like this to our annual trade show each year,” says Anderson.
