Featured Project: Graphics in the Wild
Installing graphics on bush planes, snowmobiles and boats comes with the territory when you own a wrap shop in Alaska.
This featured project comes to us from Mixed Media Graphics of Anchorage, Alaska, which for more than a quarter-century has been doing signs and banners, all types of marketing materials, website design and vehicle wraps of all types. This project dates all the way back to the 20th century and featured a combination of cut vinyl and printed graphics, according to Mixed Media owner Jerry Pflugh.
“This was in 1998, when full wraps weren’t as common as they are now,” says owner Jerry Pflugh.
He says back then, before he had his own printer, he would outsource jobs like this and in this case the graphics were printed on a 3M Scotchprint electrostatic printer which, he says, were too expensive for most shops to afford. The plane is a Beaver, an aircraft first developed by de Havilland Canada for use in World War II. After the war, the company tweaked them a bit for civilian use and they remain popular today as bush planes. Even today, Pflugh says, with all the rivets and other peculiarities of that type of plane, you would likely never see a full wrap on one.
