German Paper Company Hahnemühle Celebrates 435th Birthday
To put it in perspective, Hahnemüle is more than 200 years older than the United States is as a country.
German paper manufacturer Hahnemüle announces its 435th anniversary in 2019.
In a press release announcing its anniversary and its upcoming appearance at a European trade show, the company notes that it was Feb. 27, 1585, when the Duke of Brunswick authorized the operation of a paper mill at Relliehausen, about 150 miles south of Hamburg.
Papermaker Merten Spieß was the beneficiary of the authorization, and thus the company was born.
For almost 200 years, the business, now known as Hahnemühle, remained in family ownership. It changed hands in 1769 and then again in 1886. That’s when Carl Hahne bought it and gave the factory its current name.
The company says that its claim to fame today is being the global market leader in the fine art inkjet paper segment.
The company employees more than 200 people around the world and it has subsidiaries in the U.S., the UK, France and China.
