5 questions with Adam Sumner

Adam Sumner of Wrapix Imaging & Wrapix Academy talked getting into the industry, training installers, WRAPSCON & advice.

Adam Sumner is the owner of Wrapix Imaging and Wrapix Academy in Burbank, California.

1. You’re well-known in the vehicle wraps space, but how did you get into the industry?

I got started in the industry back in 2006 by making custom motorcycle graphics as a hobby. I grew up in an offset print shop, so printing has always been a part of my life. As I got older, I naturally gravitated toward wide-format printing.

2. Aside from wraps, what else does your shop do?

We work on a wide variety of projects — from special events to architectural films — but since COVID, vehicle wraps have been our main focus.

3. Through Wrapix Academy, you train graphics installers. What led you to take on training as well?

Years ago, I was asked to host a training class for a secondary education company, and honestly, I just fell in love with spreading the passion for wide-format printing and graphic applications. Eventually, I was given the opportunity to become a 3M Authorized Trainer. That program played a huge role in launching my career early on, so I was honored to even be considered for the title.

Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time perfecting not only my installation techniques but also my teaching methods. Some of those techniques have actually become foundational elements in several 3M training programs. I believe the most important thing we can do to move our industry forward is to share knowledge and hold each other to the highest standards. Training doesn’t just help people improve their install skills — it also teaches the value of those skills and how to present them professionally.

4. You head up the WRAPSCON space at a number of GRAPHICS PRO EXPO events. What can attendees expect to see there?

I get really excited about WRAPSCON University — it’s unlike anything else in the industry. I actually got my start at this very show back in 2005; it was my first introduction to wide-format printing. I wish a program like this had existed back then to help guide me in the right direction. This industry can be tough to navigate, from materials and printers to software and shop supplies — the options are endless. Back in the day, every time I called a supplier, they would tell me that whatever they sold was what I needed. But that wasn’t always true.

The idea behind WRAPSCON University is to provide a space for people who want to either get started in or expand their wrap business. This year, we’re offering hands-on installation training, as well as deep dives into printer options, file setup, and best practices for running an efficient wrap shop. WRAPSCON University is the future of continuing education in the wraps industry.

5. What’s the most important piece of advice you share as a wrap install trainer?

The only thing I can’t teach is patience. Installation is both a skill and an art. You have to learn to embrace your failures and continually challenge yourself. Don’t be so quick to blame the material — it’s all designed to stick to a surface. It’s our job as installers to learn how each film wants to
be installed and work with it, not fight against it.
