Exploring Open-Source Software

Challenges & benefits for engravers: Part 1.

As an engraving provider, it’s essential to have some form of graphic design software. The software you choose can range in various types and price points. In this article, I’ll discuss some of the challenges — and benefits — that each can present.

Open-source software

To begin with, the choice between open source (free to download) and commercial software will depend on your specific usage, compatibility with your machine’s operating system, and, of course, what level of sophistication you want to reach. Always remember that “better” hardware will produce better results regardless of your software package. If you’re a beginner or need a fairly basic solution, open-source software can be a really good option, and some packages offer more advanced capabilities.

Some of the benefits of open-source packages can include:

  • Exponentially lower costs: The most obvious advantage of open source generally means there will be no charge.
  • Freedom & flexibility: Open-source places a premium on ease of access, allowing developers to retrieve projects from other public sources. This increases access, allows for faster development, and encourages developers to make improvements more rapidly.
  • High quality: Open-source software thrives in a community-driven environment where challenges are discussed openly and addressed relatively quickly, meaning “glitches” can usually be quickly dealt with. This environment actively promotes and encourages developers to constantly produce better products. Being “out in the open,” so to speak, almost forces this constant improvement.
  • Security: It might initially seem that the community nature of open-source might introduce security issues. The reverse is generally true — the larger community has common objectives which almost forces strengthened security procedures.
  • Innovation & user education: The broader community system develops increasing skill levels for beginners and one person’s idea can rapidly turn into a product enhancement.

Of course, there are disadvantages. These can involve:

  • Lack of support: Perhaps the most significant challenge with open-source software is the lack of dedicated high-level customer support. A community forum is fine for discussions but might not have the technical expertise to answer questions quickly. Open-source software may not have any reliable documentation, or no documentation at all. Further, a forum isn’t going to be able to offer the stricter/more specific structure necessary if you’re part of a larger company as opposed to working on your own. It is very important to note that not all commercial packages are interchangeable with others. While some are, it is not necessarily an automatic change, and you may well have to reformat your graphics before you can use them in a different program. If you don’t like the package you start with, please ensure that you will be able to switch without losing your graphic files.
  • File compatibility: Some open-source software may have limitations in handling certain file formats. These issues can easily result in operating problems together with reduced engraving quality.
  • A lack of design capability: Most open-source packages offer little or no design capability. It has to be said, though, that there are some advanced open-source programs that do offer some basic design features. However, these may still not be advanced enough to satisfy the requirements of more sophisticated software in busy commercial settings.
  • No air assistance integration: Most open-source software does not allow for air assistance while engraving. This is generally available in commercial software and can help provide a better result by keeping the optics free from debris and smoke.
  • Free might not be free: Do your research before electing for open-source, because although free software is always open source, not all open-source is automatically free. A lot of very different licenses can be associated with open-source software and can have various restrictions and limitations built into the package. Getting past these roadblocks can end up costing you money.

Taken either individually or as a whole, then, the drawbacks may prove too much to overcome for your specific applications.

Look for Part 2 in next month’s issue, where we’ll cover the advantages and disadvantages of commercial software!
