WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-Hanes announces that it has earned an A-minus score and a leadership position in the 2018 CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) Climate Change Report. The annual report features thousands of organizations, cities, states, and regions who report their gas emissions, water management, and climate change strategies for the year.

Hanes voluntarily reports its carbon emissions data annually to the CDP and has so since 2010. The company scored in the top six percent of roughly 7,000 companies in the organization’s most recent report. Hanes also points out that it achieved the highest score in the apparel industry. With across-the-board scores in the A range, Hanes’ performance was also higher than the company’s reporting sector average and regional average.

“Hanes’ A- score is a significant milestone in our company’s mission to be an international business leader in energy management and eco-friendly business operations,” Hanes Chief Executive Officer Gerald W. Evans Jr. said. “This achievement is a direct result of the engagement of our 68,000 worldwide employees, and I thank them for their support. By embracing environmental stewardship and the conservation of natural resources, Hanes is creating value for our company, our investors, our consumers, our employees, and our communities. And we will continue to work toward achieving our mission.”

The company’s environmental initiatives include lowering year-over-year energy use, implementing stewardship programs in its manufacturing locations in Latin America, encouraging employee engagement in energy management culture, as well as partnerships with various U.S. universities to educate future business leaders on integrating environmental stewardship into a business strategy. Alongside their CDP recognition, these initiatives earned the company a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Energy Star partner of the year/sustained excellence award for 2018.

Hanes also scored higher than its reporting sector and region on the CDP disclosure for water.
