KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Sportsman Cap & Bag gathers to celebrate the company’s founder, Abe Yeddis. Founded as Pioneer Cap Company in 1937 with his father Jacob, Yeddis’ original organization evolved into the company as it is known today. The celebration marks what would have been Yeddis’ 100th birthday. Company employees marked the occasion with a celebration at corporate headquarters.

While Yeddis passed away in 2003, his lineage continues to play a major role in the company.  The company employs several family members, including his grandson Dan Saferstein, the company’s current president, and other family members such as Saferstein’s brothers Jon and Phil Saferstein, and his uncle, Bruce Blackman. Blackman serves as general manager while Jon and Phil Safterstein serve as chief technology officer and educator respectively.

Since its humble beginnings in the 1930s, the family business has seen multiple evolutions, including the brand transition from Promotional Headwear Incorporation to Sportsman Cap & Bag, additions of various major product lines, and improved shipping times.

“My grandfather and the way he ran this business were very inspirational to me, especially when I took over. He had a clear vision and wasn’t afraid of change,” states Saferstein. “And that’s how I try to run the business now.”

Saferstein began co-managing the company with Abe Yeddis in 1993 and says he maintained a focus on “adaptability, quality control, and customer service,” at the company. Since then, the company has built a client list by providing blank caps for branding in markets like team sports and corporate logos.

Today Sportsman provides soft goods such as aprons, bags, and towels from 16 distributor locations across the U.S., and maintains a headquarters in Shawnee, Kansas.
