CARLSTADT, N.J.-Pantone Color Institute reveals the 2018 Color of the Year. The organization chooses Ultra Violet (Pantone 18-3838) as the designated color, a blue-based purplish hue.

“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination,” states Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Ultra Violet that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level.”

The institute also notes the significance of purple shades as a symbol of “counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance,” citing artists such as David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, and Prince as bearers of the color.

“Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets,” the organization adds.

Ultra Violet comes as the second purple shade to enter the Pantone lineup this year. In August 2017, the company unveiled Love Symbol #2, a color inspired by Prince and officially sanctioned by the late musician’s estate.
