Gildan Activewear, a manufacturer of blank apparel, is set close its Mebane, North Caroline distribution center — affecting 128 local employees.
According to The (North Carolina) Times News, a WARN Act notice filed with the North Carolina Department of Commerce on Feb. 16 said the distribution center would permanently close by June 30.
According to company spokesperson Geneviève Gosselin, production is being shifted to Gildan’s distribution center in Charleston, South Carolina, in an effort to “simplify operations and better respond to market needs.”
Mebane employees are being offered the opportunity to relocate to Gildan’s Eden distribution center to keep their jobs.
“Transfer and relocation opportunities to our Eden distribution facility will be available to all of our Mebane employees, including current temporary employees who can be considered for full-time hire at our Eden facility. Transfer bonuses will be offered to those accepting a transfer to our Eden facility,” states Gosselin.
Full-time Gildan employees who stay on the job until the facility closes are entitled to severance packages. In addition, the company is prepared to connect employees with resources to find new jobs if they do not wish to transfer to Eden.
