MONTREAL-Gildan announces the opening of a newly-refurbished community park in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The park is the largest of its type in the Honduran city and the second-largest in the country.

The company inaugurated the site with a ceremony on May 15, which featured President Juan Orlando Hernández, Gildan representatives, and community members. Gildan says the new park provides a “modern, multi-sport recreational space” for San Pedro Sula residents and promotes activities through the “Parques para una Vida Mejor” (Better Life Parks) program.

“We are very pleased to be able to help promote exercise and sport as a healthy lifestyle alternative to the citizens of San Pedro Sula,” says Claudia Sandoval, vice president of corporate citizenship for Gildan. “We believe that active living through sport and fitness can provide a healthy outlet for youth, create a greater sense of community, and encourage people to improve their physical health.”

Sandoval adds that the sports facilities also offer “a safe place for families and members of the community to play and be together in a positive environment.”

The “Parques para una Vida Mejor” (Better Life through Parks) campaign, created by the Honduran government in partnership with private companies, focuses on recovering public spaces for healthy recreation. The San Pedro Sula site marks the 55th park to enter the program. The facility features multi-purpose fields, a running track, picnic areas, and energy-efficient LED lighting.

As the largest private employer in the greater San Pedro Sula area, Gildan frequently invests in community and regional programs. In October 2017, the company earned its 10th consecutive social responsibility award for contributions to healthcare, education, and training programs in the area.
