Melville, New York-based Canon U.S.A., the U.S. arm of Tokyo-based Canon, has maintained its No. 3 ranking in terms of U.S. patents granted in 2016, the company says.

This is the 31st year Canon Inc. has finished in the top three companies for U.S. patent holders.

The rankings are maintained by IFI CLAIMS Patent Services, which tracks such data every year. Canon was granted a total of 3,665 patents in 2016. Even though that was down 11 percent over the number granted the previous year the company still stayed at No. 3 behind IBM and Samsung Electronics. In fact the top five all stayed the same in 2016 compared with the previous year. Behind IBM, Samsung and Canon were Qualcomm and Google, which were also 4 and 5, respectively, last year.

The remaining top 10 in 2016 patents awarded were Intel; LG Electronics; Microsoft; Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.; and Sony.

According to Canon, this is the 12th consecutive year it was ranked first among Japanese companies awarded patents.
