LOS ANGELES-AST Sportswear announces the acquisition of the former American Apparel dyeing and finishing plant located at 1237 Cerise Ave. in Hawthorne, California The purchase of the plant includes equipment for fabric dyeing and finishing, as well as industrial dryers, compressors, and boilers.

“The purchase of the Hawthorne dyeing and finishing plant is an imperative addition to AST Sportswear’s production capacity,” says Abdul Rashid, chief operating officer at AST. “While AST Sportswear already operates knitting and cut-and-sew operations, this procurement will further reduce our reliance on contract dye facilities.”

Rashid adds that this acquisition streamlines the company’s supply chain, lowers costs, and improves quality control since it will bring nearly all the company’s dyeing operations in-house. As part of the acquisition, Rashid adds that AST plans on investing in automation technology to maximize the facility’s output. Management staff has not been announced but the company expects the new facility to add more than 120 manufacturing jobs.

The acquisition of the 95,000 sq. ft. location comes after a three-month search for a dyeing facility for AST, says Rashid. Originally closed by American Apparel in Feb. 2016, AST expects to begin operations in early 2017.
