Hanes Earns 9th Consecutive Energy Star Partner of the Year Award
Hanes earns its ninth consecutive U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Energy Star Partner of the Year award.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-Hanes earns its ninth consecutive U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Energy Star Partner of the Year award for its environmental stewardship initiatives. The organization recognizes the company for its efforts in energy conservation, carbon emissions reduction, and sustainability.
“HanesBrands is incredibly honored to earn our ninth consecutive Energy Star Partner of the Year award and will accept it on behalf of our approximately 70,000 worldwide employees who are committed to energy management and environmental responsibility,” says Javier Chacon, chief global manufacturing officer for HanesBrands.
Chacon notes that the award also designates Hanes as the only apparel company to be recognized by the organization in its 26-year history. With the award, the Energy Star program recognizes the company for multiple efforts in 2017 including:
- Lowering year-over-year energy use per pound by six percent, a savings of more than $4 million.
- Spearheading environmental programs such as a biomass power plant in El Salvador and water use reduction pilot projects.
- Fostering an energy management culture with employee engagement. The company recently held a staff event at its Dominican Republic manufacturing plant, which yielded roughly 125 employee-led energy reduction ideas.
- Partnering with universities. The company lists schools such as Wake Forest University, Appalachian State University, North Carolina State University, and the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, as collaborators striving to “educate the next generation of business leaders about the importance of integrating environmental stewardship in business strategy.”
Chacon and a team from Hanes accept the Energy Star award at an awards banquet in Washington, D.C. on April 20 alongside companies like The Boeing Company, Colgate-Palmolive Company, General Motors, and Raytheon.
