What are the best types of wood for use with a laser?

The most common woods used with the laser are cherry, walnut, maple, alder, and oak. These woods are considered hard woods and have grains that work well with lasers. When compared to soft woods, hard woods like these require higher power settings for engraving and cutting and produce a more noticeable contrast.
