You Are Responsible for Servicing and Testing Your Fume Extractor

Find out how often to check your machine and why documentation is important.

Employers are responsible for maintaining LEV dust or fume extraction systems to ensure they are kept in effective working order and good repair. They must also ensure the equipment has been suitably installed.

A thorough examination should be carried out as part of the installation process and at least every 14 months thereafter by a qualified engineer. It is the duty of the employer to keep a suitable record of each examination for a period of at least five years. This record should include details of repairs carried out during the examination and test. I recommend keeping a log of weekly checks of all your extraction systems to monitor performance and filter condition.
